The Passion Project

VDVR Equipment was born out of my passion for playing video games and always wanting to try the cutting edge of tech in each gaming generation. The GS-1 gunstock series is my design solution, in a sea of gunstocks for those of us who like to use gunstocks when playing VR shooters. Below is a lil snapshot of what lead to VDVR Equipment and the GS-1 Elite.

ThE first Taste

Lets go back to 1982, my first taste of VRish gaming was with the Vectrex 3D Imager. A vector based gaming system that only had three games for the imager. 3D Narrow Escape, 3D Crazy Coaster and 3D Minestorm. I still own this today, it played a large role in my young video game days. This is the initial video game system that lead me here today.

Virtual I.O. glasses VR?

Fast forward about 15 years and PS1 is going strong Wipeout is one of the hottest new racers out there. My second VRish experience came during this era. A racing cockpit I made from my dad’s scrap plywood and 2×4’s, a mad catz steering wheel, a pair of virtual I.O. Glasses and a fan.

I put on the glasses, basically a 90 inch tv, covered my head with a towel to block light, then started a race. A friend would start the fan as you took off. Was nothing like it at the time, I played so much I could beat every track flawlessly on phantom class.

The Dawn of VR

Fast forward 20 years to 2016 and most of us got our hands on fairly decent functioning VR for the first time. The options for deep pockets, Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. For the budget gamer you had the PSVR 1, which is the path I took. I already had a PS4 and my computer wasn’t good enough for PCVR. I did buy a pro, huge difference over o.g.

Then along comes a game called Farpoint with a new gunstock controller. That is when I had the Experience.

The Experience

This is an experience you will never have with flat gaming, it’s one of those moments that defines just how cool VR and VR shooters can be. I just unlocked the shotgun, now that I had that, the game introduced a new enemy. The crab thing in the picture to the left or above. If you haven’t played it, in VR they seem like their 10-12 feet tall. They charge at you like a giant bull.

Well one was charging at me, I aimed the shotgun at it to shoot it and the stars aligned. I took one shot and as soon as I hit the mob, he stopped, then I watched him as he proceeded to fly over me and land behind me dead. It was something I could never recreate again no matter how many times I tried. But one of the coolest things I have ever experienced in gaming. Thus my love for gunstocks when playing shooters in VR was born.

2nd Gen Vr

In anticipation of Firewall being released, I was expecting a gunstock like the aim to be released as well. Especially when they announced no manual reloading(fail). Ultimately because that never happened is why I began the journey to make a gunstock. I needed something because floating hands just doesn’t feel right.

I did look around at what was out there but wasn’t sold on anything. Due to complaints people had with tracking or the blind reload mechanic not being super intuitive/difficult, janky buttstocks or the price for what you get. I felt with my shop and skills, I could make just as good of one, based on what I saw on the market at the time. With that I decided to design my own gunstock.

Design Experience

In 2001 I graduated with an AA in design, with the hopes of getting a job at a game developer. The dot com bust Ianded me a job working in the sign industry, working with cut vinyl graphics. I returned to college and received my BA in design in 2009, while working in the sign industry. I started my own sign company in 2012 and continue to run it to this day.

Fabrication Skills

Over the years in the sign industry, on top of doing design and vinyl work. I taught myself how to weld, paint, run a CNC, pretty much all aspects of sign fabrication, design and installation. I can do a entire project from start to finish, which gives me unique insight, that most job positions when compartmentalized generally lack.

What got the fab ball rolling, I started with welding aluminum because I wanted to make a new racing cockpit out of scrap pieces from work. I had just bought the new GT Logitech steering wheel. I was itching for a new rig to mount it on to play Gran Turismo 2. That was my 2nd racing cockpit. Today I use a DOF Reality motion platform for racing and flight games, that I have customized with some cool features.

All Roads, one Destination

The skills I have acquired by designing, fabricating and installing signs for 24 years, has translated over well to the 3D fabrication process, especially the Design/CNC skills. Allowing me to accelerate the development process when I started designing what is now the GS-1 gunstock series. My background knowledge in signs has influenced material choice and design aspects to make the GS-1 series as streamlined, modular and repairable as possible.

Passion over commercial

Because this was never intended to be a commercial gunstock, I designed with no cost considerations, I just made it do what I wanted it to do and look good doing it. Because this was not created to make me a living, I was in no rush to design, make it and get it to market. Thus there was no need to cut corners or cheapen the materials. The main or original focus, was to develop a working gunstock that works as good as possible with all VR shooters, with the easiest blind reloading system I could think of for me and a friend.

The Commercial Moment

Along my path in creating the GS-1 Pro, which is the initial gunstock I designed. I had a great idea for a pump shotgun gunstock, based off my pro design so I went to work. Made a quick prototype, what did ya know, it worked, it had some issues to iron out but essentially worked and worked well for a one off. Thus the GS-1 Elite was born.

There was a lot of trial and error to get to what you see today. Individually thousands of modifications along the way, as a whole hundreds. All of that to try and stamp out any issues in functionality and quality, correcting all the things revealed during testing that didn’t work or needed more strength, moved etc.

Rest assured when I decided to make this a commercial gunstock. Any of the stuff I was willing to live with because it was fine enough for me, was cleaned up for the finished product. I have done the best I can to achieve the best balance of Quality, Performance, Price and Form Factor without cutting corners for you the consumer. It is what I would want for me in a commercial product, so I’m not going to sell anything less to you.

I believe the GS-1 Elite separates itself from most, if not all other gunstocks on the market. Due to the streamlined design and feature set. Because the shotgun action is so cool, I wanted to share this with everyone. Pump shotguns in VR have been a bane of existence for VR shooters since day one. My solution makes it great to play with pump shotguns again. I have spent the last 1.25 years refining the GS-1 Elite from the “idea” moment to give you what you see today. A streamlined, efficient, strait forward, badass looking, classic American designed hybrid VR gunstock.

Transparency & truth

I am not here to sell you a false reality, that if you buy my gunstocks you’re going to be instantly turned in the #1 player in the world. I’m not desperate trying to make a living with this. So I’m not going to blow smoke at you to get your money. All gunstocks will have some sort of learning curve associated with them. It will take you some time to get really proficient with it. How much time, could be an hour or could be a few days, depends on you and the gunstock design. If it’s a good design it should be closer to an hour to start to feel comfortable. I will say this, if you’re not willing to put in a lil effort learning it, a gunstock may not be for you, doesn’t matter the maker. I will also say if you do put in the effort, it’s super gratifying/satisfying when you pull off perfect reloads and jack people/mobs at the same time. Something you will never experience with floating hands.

Draw speed and accuracy will improve instantly, most decent gunstocks will do that out of the box. So don’t be fooled by others boasting about those stats, the advantage really only applies against most non gunstock users and your skill with a rifle will also come into play. Where gunstocks get difficult is during blind reloading. Ease of use is the key thing for all gunstocks. If it’s too difficult or cumbersome, clunky or a giant design, it doesn’t matter what else you got. Just like if the gameplay is broken, doesn’t matter how pretty the game is. I believe the GS-1 gunstocks are some of the easiest to blind reload. which means it has one of the easiest learning curves.

The confidence I have in the GS-1 blind reload and overall functionality, is why I post full length gameplay demos with the GS-1 gunstocks and not just perfect 15 second reload or aiming clips. That is the best and most honest way to show how a gunstock works in real time, against whatever pops up in game. Individual players gunstock skill will vary, some will be better than others with one, but everyone using a gunstock will see improved results. You get to see the mistakes and awesome moments in all their glory in my demo videos. That way you can determine, if you think any of the GS-1 series is worth your hard earned money over another companies gunstock or a piece or garbage not worth your time.

In Closing

If you have gotten this far thanks for reading about my journey to this point. I hope this gives you a better idea of who I am, where I came from and what VDVR Equipment is about. I hope this helps build confidence that if you buy a product from me, you can feel comfortable knowing you will be getting a quality product and not some cheap knockoff copy or some untested back door 3D printed solution. There are a lot of gunstocks out there, so picking the right one can be daunting. Hopefully the information on this site and my demo videos will give you enough information to make that decision easier for you. This is just the beginning, I have more products on the horizon, stay tuned for more. Happy gaming everyone and thanks for looking.
